In March, 1966, in spite of the presence of uniformed and undercover police officers, the World Cup trophy was stolen in London where it was being exhibited. The gold and lapis lazuli trophy, the soccer equivalent to the Lombardy trophy, depicted the Greek goddess Nike, the goddess of victory.
